Can’t wait for the weekend to come.

I’m still in the office right now, mind you. How I miss the weekends of riding out to the trails and spending time in the company of trees, rocks and dirt. I’ve let myself become horribly unfit these days with work and whatnot. Tomorrow, I shall spend an hour in the gym. Or in the pool. Whatever it is, I SHALL work out for an hour this weekend. Whatever it takes.

It’s something we must have been given by a client or someone. Its a cretive showreel from Microsoft Advertising. And it features a fishing rod, magnetic fishies and a CD reel of…something. I didn’t see what.

Annnnd, wacky hijinks ensues! Ninja goes fishing! For magnetic fishies while sitting on my laptop but fishing nonetheless. Btw, Ninja’s really enjoying her new home at my desk.

You know that nursery rhyme? Rub a dub dub, three men in a tub? Well, here are three soft toys in a tub. A ninja, a patrick and a squrtle (I have no idea how to spell its name). All gone fishing too.

A shot of part of my desk. As you can see, I am QUITE at home at work. There’s my True Blood calender with my ‘burpday’ marked out, my starbucks coffee mug, a bottle of Lolita, a couple of CDs for my clients and Seth Godin’s ‘Tribes’ sitting by all the samples I have. And before you ask, I am not quite done with ‘Tribes’ yet. I’ve gotten about ten pages in. Which is weird, considering that I can finish reading Thomas Hardy in a couple of days.

And a cute post card that my inner copywriter feels irked as hell that I find it cute but it’s cute nonetheless, BAD GRAMMAR BE DAMNED!!!!! Hah. I have a little suspicion it was done on purpose to irritate people like me. But is cute. Better safe then sorry. heh.

Its a slippery slope, my friends.

So, all my life, I’ve only dreamt of moving overseas. To pursue a career in something. What was important to me was contributing to the world. Maybe in education, maybe in health services, maybe in some sort of economic or governmental policy planning. What was important to me was not getting sidetracked into security like so many of my peers in this country but to get out and to help. And yet, somehow, I’ve managed to get sidetracked.

I never managed to do my UNESCO internship in Thailand, nor the Hendrich Boll foundation internship. I never took any steps towards becoming a Kiva Fellow. Neither did I ever finish learning ASL and volunteered with the association for the deaf here. Instead, I compromised and settled for staying in Singapore, and to make up for being disappointed in it and the insecurity attached to being here, I looked for a career to make up for it.

Now, I’m not saying I don’t like my career path now. My line of work now is great and I love every second of it, even the difficult parts that make me want to skewer something with a pen. Yet at the same time, I am fully aware that this is not how I want my life to be. Maybe a few months ago, this would have been the perfect path for me because a few months ago, my whole life looked set to be in Singapore. But now, I’m no longer constrained by the fact that I will be in Singapore forever. And I find that I still do want, more than ever, to head overseas to Canada. It won’t be immediate, because I still love my job now and want to stay in it for a while more. But I’ll definitely be putting things into place so I can get the mechanics for the move working. And I’m excited because my life is finally going the way I want it to.

Somehow, somewhere, I must find the reserves for this.

Although, a bright spot is being told that I am good at my job and that I am a valued member of the team. At least there’s something that I don’t suck at which I really want. =)

BUT, but, but…be patient, I am working on a nice surprise that I will reveal soon. Its wonderfully exciting for me and made possible by a very nice person. =) And my life now is, running on extremes of positivism and negativism. On one hand, everything wonderful is happening to me, professionally. On the other hand, I am going through a terribly rough patch with myself now. So I’m busy, happy, exhausted and depressed. The only thing to do now is to keep working harder and harder until my rough patch goes away.

Anyway, I can’t wait for everything to settle down and start coasting along happily. For now, I’m going to enjoy the ride and try my bestest to post often.

Anyway, work wise. I’m currently interning as a copywriter and its turning out to be quite an experience. The thing is, I am both in my comfort zone and yet completely out of my depth. I feel like I’ve been doing some of the stuff for ages, vetting copy, its like reading through other people’s essays and correcting them even though I was petrified I might come off as a total grammar nazi but today I was given permission to be one. But then there’s the whole creative brainstorming thing to think up of copy for stuff and I am just so bad at that because I haven’t the least idea how to go about it. But since the point of an internship is to learn, well, I guess being out of my depth is expected. And yes, I am learning, it is thrilling to mess around with words and I like writing. What I’m not sure I like it the level of neuroticism that comes with creative word crafting. I might very well go completely insane worrying over whether an idea or a copy I thought of is good enough or not but I think its a treatable issue. Anyway, so far, enjoying work.
